The Menu | All-American Birthday | Party of the Month

Today, Kerry is talking to us about the yummy (and super easy!) menu. I love the red baskets instead of plates. Super cute & oh so practical.

Easy, Festive Food At The Park

In order to make it a laid back, low key event, we decided to throw the party at a nearby park on lazy summer afternoon, in the middle of the week. A few guests were unable to make it due to summer vacations, but the rest were more than happy to take a day off from cooking during the work week! We sat on blankets in the shade, watched the kids play & enjoyed a good ol’ ‘serve yourself’ buffet.

Ditch The Plates & Serve Finger Foods

After serving extensive, gourmet BBQ buffets the last few years, this year we decided to keep the menu VERY simple. A variety of American ‘finger foods’ were placed on the buffet table, such as hot dogs, apples, strawberries, cherries, apple strudel & single serving snack containers of potato chips.

Instead of using plates, I went with red plastic deli baskets lined with pieces of brown paper lunch bags, which guests happily filled with their favorite goodies. Not only did this menu make it easier to serve, it also gave the party more of a country picnic feel for guests, as they sat on their blankets enjoying their All American summertime meal.

No Stress, Visit With Guests

In an effort to avoid slaving over a BBQ during most of the party, I decided to boil the hot dogs right before I left the house and placed them in a disposable buffet chafing dish. I lit the canned heat upon my arrival at the park, which kept the dogs nice and warm until guests got hungry. It really made things much less stressful and actually allowed me time to mingle with guests!

We also had a “Make Your Own Sundae Bar” with all the fixings, along with All American snacks like Cracker Jacks & Red Licorice!

The ‘Sundae Bar’ was a big hit with both the adults & kids! The kids loved making their own ice cream concoctions and the adults really loved the chocolate covered sunflower seeds we found at Home Goods…and I must say, I loved not having to cut pieces of cake & dole out ice cream to all our guests!

Ever wonder how to serve ice cream on a hot summer day at the park? The secret to the perfect ice cream consistency at an outside event is DRY ICE. When bringing ice cream to a park, don’t forget the DRY ICE! It’s an absolute must. No dry ice = Milkshakes, instead of Sundaes!

Guests really enjoyed the low key feel to the meal, sitting on their blankets, eating their hot dogs & ice cream sundaes and unwinding from a busy work day. There’s just something about sitting outside on a warm summer evening, sharing a meal with family and friends that makes you stop and enjoy life even more!

The DIY Touches | All-American Birthday | Party of the Month

Today, Kerry shares a few of the DIY features from her son’s birthday…  I did the baseball rice krispie treats she mentioned for the baseball birthday we threw for my son, Brady.   We used thin red licorice rope instead of icing – which helped keep the lines straight disguise my complete inability to work with any type of icing. .

Nothing’s Wrong With Store-Bought

Unfortunately, this year I didn’t quite have the energy to go all out on my son’s birthday party, as I’ve done in the past….so this time I kept the DIY features to a minimum. Instead of making everything myself, like I normally do, I tried keeping things simple with pre-made & pre-packaged items. The handmade touches in this birthday party were the custom designed printables, printed favor bags & the homemade rice krispy treat baseballs.

DIY Party Favor Bags

These ‘rustic looking’ party favor bags worked great for the farm country, All American theme. Not only did they fit right in with the country feel but they definitely fit the budget and were already sitting in my kitchen drawer!

I decided to try printing directly on brown paper lunch bags, left over from the school year, instead of printing separate decals then cutting & gluing. After a few trial runs, the printer finally got used to the process and created some adorable DIY favor bags.

Baseball Themed Treats

For a quick & easy party favor, whip up some Rice Krispy Treats with that box of cereal in the cupboard and cut them into a shape that fits your theme!

These baseball treats were cut with a large round cookie cutter and then decorated with store bought cookie icing.

Super simple and definitely still a hit with your party goers!

So, the DIY lesson for today is… don’t be afraid to try new things! Throw a lunch bag in your printer or make something from materials found around the house and see what you come up with. You may just surprise yourself!

The Decor | All-American Birthday | Party of the Month

Next up for our Party of the Month…. the decor details!

All American Birthday Decor

When imagining the All American Birthday theme, I pictured a rustic, country feel with touches of Americana scattered throughout. I wanted guests to feel they walked onto an old country farm in the heart of America. In order to convey that farm feel, I used blue and red gingham fabrics with wooden baskets and crates. I threw in an American Flag print as an accent fabric, which tied in the colors and reinforced the theme.

Small American Flags and simple flowers added color and height to the tables, while the floral vases inserted in burlap bags added another level of texture and added more to the country farm feel. Candy filled jars and assorted ribbon accented the red, white & blue color scheme, along with the custom printables, that used navy, deep red and images of stars & baseballs to add detail to the overall look.

The key to coordinating your decor, believe it or not, is Don’t Try To Match Everything! Using different patterns, textures and fabrics within the same color palate and adding interest with cute ribbon & flowers will create a more pleasing atmosphere.

Monochromatic decor can look stylish if done correctly, but mixing things up a bit can also be just as glamorous. Also, try to use items from around the house that will fit your theme. Here, I combined baskets, wooden crates & jars we had stored away to help give the table it’s country feel.

A few simple touches with some fabric, household items & some flowers can really go a long way. While it’s always rewarding to put together an over the top, extravagant soiree, sometimes it’s nice to keep it simple, but beautiful at the same time!

All American Party Favors

These rustic, country party favor bags were made from brown paper lunch bags and were filled with Americana goodies. The custom decals were printed directly onto the paper bag and the favors were placed on top of a wooden crate for guests to easily grab on their way out. Inside the bag, guests found homemade rice krispy treats disguised as baseballs with gummy hot dog candy & baseball trading cards (which were a huge hit with guests, young & old!)

The favor bags were quick and easy to put together and illustrate you really don’t need to go overboard with favors. Do something creative with the bag, insert a few goodies & a toy or activity that fits your theme and you’re good to go!

Party of the Month | All-American Birthday

Our very first PLK – Party of the Month – was submitted by Kerry Avila, the creator and owner of Impromptu Parties, an online store that offers creative & crafty party packages for busy moms. She recently threw an All American Birthday Party for her son with the goal of keeping it simple, beautiful and cost effective.

Today we’re featuring an overview of the party, stay tuned this week for details on DIY projects, the budget + food!

Venturing Outside of the Box

Ever since my son played his first game of baseball, this past spring, he’s been a huge fan of the game. He intently watches games on television, keeping track of outs & pitches and even collects baseball cards. So, when he requested a Baseball theme for his birthday this summer, I honestly wasn’t a bit surprised. My man and I are big baseball fans ourselves, so I definitely didn’t mind creating a baseball bash!

Being in the party biz, I wanted to do something a little more creative for his birthday. I’ve seen a number of adorable baseball themed parties out there, but I wanted to venture out of the box a bit to come up with something a little different.

Since his birthday takes place around the 4th of July, I thought why not combine the Red, White & Blue with our All American Past Time for an All American Birthday. What’s more American than baseball and apple pie combined with the Stars & Stripes!

Keep It Simple, Yet Beautiful

Not only did I want the party to have a creative theme, but I also wanted it to be a low key affair. In the past, we’ve gone all out on his birthday. We’ve had a Fun In The Sun Soiree and a Puppy Parade complete with handmade costumes, carefully decorated cakes & party games galore… but to be completely honest, I just didn’t have the energy this year to throw another grandiose event.

This year I wanted to keep it simple, yet still beautiful! I wanted a no-fuss menu that would give me time to visit with guests combined with beautiful, well-coordinated decor with custom details that only looked like I spent weeks putting everything together. The result was a great success and definitely illustrates you can have a creative, crafty party without a lot of stress!
